How to Make Smarter Hiring Decisions with shiftNOW’s Performance Metrics

The hiring process is tedious. Between posting opportunities, reviewing applications and resumes, and scheduling interviews, it takes a lot of time and effort to find the right candidate. Despite all of this effort, the hiring process can still end up fruitless.

With high turnover rates and fast-paced environments, businesses need workers who not only show up—but show up ready to deliver great service. In recent years the hospitality industry has held one of the highest turnover and unemployment rates across industries, with turnover between 70 to 80% and unemployment rates at 6-7%.

Mishiring doesn’t just mean starting the process all over again; it also means investing more money into recruitment, hiring, and training again.

At shiftNOW, we’re committed to equipping hospitality professionals with the insights needed to make informed hiring decisions every time. Our platform provides detailed worker performance metrics to help businesses understand a worker’s professionalism, skillset, punctuality, and reliability before bringing them in for a shift or full-time position.

Let’s dive into the insights our platform offers!

shiftNOW Performance Metrics

Worker Rating

Based on a 5-star scale, this rating is the average of all past ratings given to a worker by the businesses they’ve completed shifts for. This rating is not specific to a role type; rather, it accounts for all ratings received across all role types

Every worker on the shiftNOW platform starts with a 5-star rating, which is then adjusted accordingly as they receive feedback from businesses.

A worker’s rating gives you an overall sense of their performance and professionalism. When reviewing this metric, be sure to check out the number of shifts the worker has completed as well. For example, a new worker with zero shifts under their belt and a 5-star rating could differ greatly from a worker with 150 shifts and a 4.8-star rating. When reviewing applicants, the latter would likely be the wiser choice for your needs.

Shift Type Rating

While many hospitality workers may have experience across multiple shift types, they may not perform the same across these different roles. After all, serving guests requires a much different skillset than working as a line cook.

That’s where the Shift Type Rating comes in. This metric averages the ratings a worker has received specifically for the shift type you’re hiring for, allowing you to gauge whether an applicant is the right fit.

For example, a worker might have an overall rating of 4.5 stars, but a Shift Type Rating of 3 stars for their dishwashing experience. This doesn’t mean that the worker isn’t a fit for your business; it just means that they’re likely not a fit for this shift type.

Reliability Percentage

When using a platform like shiftNOW, it means you have an immediate workforce need. So, when someone has confirmed that they’ll work a shift, you want to know they’ll follow through.

A worker’s Reliability Percentage provides insight into a worker’s dependability by accounting for prior late arrivals, no-shows, or last-minute cancellations. A high reliability score indicates a worker who consistently honors their commitments, just what you need to keep your business running smoothly.

Every worker on the shiftNOW platform starts with a 100% reliability score. The score automatically adjusts based on any bad actions of a worker.

On-Time Percentage

Managing a business comes with a full plate, and being short-staffed due to a scheduled worker being late can negatively impact the rest of your operations. With everything you have going on, the last thing you need is to wonder whether your scheduled worker(s) will be on time.

Our On-Time Percentage displays the percentage of shifts a worker arrives on time for and accounts for all shifts. This provides further insight into their reliability, allowing you to schedule worker’s with confidence.

The On-Time Percentage begins to display on a worker’s profile once they have completed at least three shifts through the platform.

On-Time Streak

Similar to the On-Time Percentage, our On-Time Streak provides businesses insight into how punctual a worker is.

The On-Time Streak displays the number of consecutive shifts the worker has been on time for and becomes visible on their profile once they have been on time for five straight shifts.

This metric provides more color around a worker’s recent performance when it comes to punctuality.

Why It Matters

These performance metrics don’t just save you time—they help build stronger, more reliable teams. In an industry where one no-show can throw off an entire night of service, having access to past performance data can mean the difference between a smooth shift and a staffing scramble.

While traditional job boards communicate a worker’s experience, they don’t provide insight into their actual performance on the job. Without these insights, businesses are more prone to making the wrong hiring decision and wasting precious resources. For example, a line cook with 15 years of experience might seem like the right fit on paper, but how do you know whether they are punctual or reliable?

By leveraging shiftNOW’s performance metrics, you can:

  • Reduce hiring risks

  • Reward and rebook high performers

  • Increase guest satisfaction by ensuring quality staff

At shiftNOW, we believe that better data leads to better hiring decisions.
